D-day for £85m town centre revamp

HUNDREDS of homes will be built as part of a multi-million pound 'once-in-a-generation' redevelopment - if councillors give the go-ahead.

They are poised to rule on four 'major development' applications with the potential to radically transform Newcastle town centre.
The proposals, to be decided next week, affect three sites - Ryecroft, the York Place shopping centre and the former Midway car park. Ryecroft is the subject of two applications - one for 175 new homes, the other for 53 retirement apartments. Both are recommended for approval.
The site is also earmarked for an 'aparthotel, although this is not part of the applications up for consideration by the planning committee.
