'Andy was brilliant behind the stumps. And his batting won or saved many games for Checkley'

Carr died on Friday at the age of 51 after battling against cancer. Tributes have been paid from across the Staffordshire cricket community - and around the country - to a man who not only impacted the sport on the field, but off it as well.

A Checkley statement read: "As a club we have been extremely touched by the heartfelt support that has been received since the passing of our long-serving member Andy Carr.

"Andy, throughout his lifetime of dedicated membership, held several roles, and devoted his time, energy and skills in helping develop the club into what it is today.

"Being part of a family with a long association to the club, Andy went on to serve as a player, captain, committee member and coach.

"Andy played senior cricket for 36 years, and besides the three years he played at Leek, the rest of his playing days were spent at his beloved Checkley. He was part of the successful teams that won the Staffordshire Cup, Talbot Cup and T20 competition.

"Andy was well respected throughout the cricketing community, and was regarded as being one of the best, if not the best, wicketkeeper of his generation.

"We were blessed to have Andy as one of our lifelong members. His commitment as a player, his family values and work ethic as a club person epitomised a standard for all to behold.

"Our sincere love and thoughts are with Sam, Liberty, Jackson and Gavin, Jo, Ellie, Lucy and Zoe, along with Andy's father-in-law Bryan.

"God Bless, Andy."

Carr's respected standing in cricket has been evident as former teammates, opponents, friends and young cricketers have all shared their memories of him.

A gritty batsman and exceptional wicketkeeper, Carr was also a highly-regarded coach and spent three seasons in charge of Staffordshire's senior side.

That sat alongside roles he held coaching the county's Development XI and under-18s. He also played four matches for Staffordshire.
