Senators eulogize Enrile

The Senate yesterday held a necrological service for Juan Ponce Enrile, the chamber’s former leader whose role from martial law to people power made him a polarizing figure in Philippine politics.

Enrile’s historic roles were laid out for all to hear in the eulogies shared by incumbent and former senators during the service at the Senate plenary hall.

There was no mention of the human rights violations committed during the late president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s martial law, in deference to its main architect Enrile.

But in the eulogy of former senator Richard Gordon, he said he did not “always walk the same path” with Enrile, especially following the assassination of his friend, opposition leader Evelio Javier, just days after the 1986 snap elections.
