From Beats to ByLines: Writing News Stories That Matter

As a young and aspiring journalist who was once a student journalist, I've learned that news writing is perhaps the most challenging and thrilling of all journalistic forms.

From Beats to ByLines: Writing News Stories That Matter

Its difficulty lies in discipline—it follows a strict structure, unlike other categories. The inverted pyramid format demands that the most critical information be presented first, followed by layers of supporting details and facts. On top of that, news writing must be accurate, impartial, and clear, often under tight deadlines.

What sets it apart is its ability to provide not just information, but context and analysis. It helps readers understand why events matter and how they impact daily life. Through this, news writing becomes more than a tool for information; it becomes a guide for decision-making and civic engagement.

It plays a crucial role in keeping the public informed, bridging the gap between events and people through real-time updates.

It also holds those in power accountable, fosters public dialogue, and preserves history. Unlike fleeting social media posts, articles serve as records of events, voices, and sentiments—proof that stories, once told, cannot be deleted.

As READiscover entered its second year, the program proudly launched its first workshop for 2025, focused on news writing. We had the privilege of inviting Elijah Felice Rosales, an award-winning reporter at The Philippine STAR. He earned recognition as Trade Reporter of the Year in 2019, Finance Reporter of the Year in 2022, and Telco-Transport Reporter of the Year in 2023.
