Severe Tropical Storm Opong has left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) after making landfall in Vietnam, paving the way for the easterlies to prevail over the country, state weather forecasters said yesterday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the departure of Opong has weakened the southwest monsoon, leaving the easterlies — or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean - as the dominant weather system.
