A NOSTALGIC BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR TESS REYES
October 13, 2025
|The Philippine Star
I attended the 80th birthday celebration of Tess Reyes last Saturday, Oct. 4 (her actual birthday is on Oct. 5), at the McKinley Clubhouse in Taguig.
Mama Tess, as I fondly call her, is the widow of my former boss, Angelo Reyes, who served as secretary of the Department of Energy from 2008 to 2010.
My time at the Department of Energy was one of the most memorable and fulfilling periods of my career. I worked directly under the Office of the Secretary (OSEC) as his Media and Public Affairs officer. Secretary Reyes — or “SATR” as we used to call him — was a dynamic and proactive leader. He was always on the go, eager to find solutions to the problems we were facing. A tireless worker, he would begin his days early and end them late.
Many feared him because of his stern demeanor and military background. He was strict, disciplined, and didn’t mince words — especially when he was upset. I remember that whenever he called my cellphone, I would instinctively stand up while answering, even when I was alone! But those who truly knew him saw his kindness, generosity and willingness to help. There was always a long line of people hoping to meet him and seek advice or assistance. He never turned anyone away, which often caused his schedule to fall behind.
