5 things to know about the modernization PUV

As part of the Department of Transportation's (DOTr's) continued commitment to providing the Filipino people with more efficient and economical ways to get from point A to point B, the Department has partnered with other organizations to improve on the current state of public utility vehicles.

By the end of 2024, DOTr hopes to see the iconic jeepney and its systems updated and modernized.

Granted, the road to this upgrade hasn't been easy. But then again, no worthwhile change ever is.

Here's why Filipinos should look forward to more contemporary jeepneys plying Philippine streets:

1. It's a major step towards healthier future generations. Newer jeepneys will comply with current environmental standards, which have stricter rules and demand lower carbon emissions.

Currently, the older jeepneys, which are usually poorly maintained, can be seen belching clouds of toxic black smoke that make up 15 percent of all particulate emissions in Manila. Children who live and go to school in the city inhale this mix of pollutants. In recent generations, this has given rise to an alarming rate of pulmonary conditions such as allergic rhinitis and asthma.
