Falling by 0.6% from a year earlier, the productivity of Britain’s private sector disappointed yet again last year.

Indeed, it has basically flatlined for nearly two decades, and is now 0.7% below what it was in 2019, on the eve of the pandemic, and 1.2% lower than in 2007, a year before the global financial crisis.
Prior to that, it had been growing at a steady if not electrifying rate since a brief plateau in the early 1990s.
