The UK should recommit to the two-state solution

The world looks on at Israel's renewed aggression towards Gaza with a mix of fury and despair. There is anger at the war crime of withholding aid to starve out the Palestinian people; there's disbelief at the idea that Israel is seeking permanently to drive Palestinians from their homes and occupy Gaza; and there is an exhausted impotence at the thought that, compounding Hamas's determination to destroy Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government stands as an immovable obstacle to peace, set to kill thousands more Palestinians and imperil the future of Israel itself.

The international community, though, is not powerless. The condemnation of Israel by Canada's Mark Carney, the French president, Emmanuel Macron and the UK’s Keir Starmer - who have all stood staunchly by Israel's right to defend itself after the barbarous acts of terror of 7 October — cut through. More people in Israel are aware of its deepening and dangerous isolation.
