SSI tries to solve family dispute, hacked to death

A Special Sub-Inspector of Police (SSI), M Shanmugavel (57), was brutally hacked to death late on Tuesday night while attempting to resolve a dispute between a man and his two sons at a coconut farm owned by an AIADMK MLA in Sikkanuthu village near Gudimangalam in Tiruppur.
Six special police teams have been formed to nab the three suspects who are on the run and a solatium of ₹1 crore has been announced for the officer's family. The officer, attached to the Gudimangalam police station and a native of Udumalaipet, was on patrol duty when he received a call about a family dispute turning violent.
Moorthy (65), and his elder sons Manikandan and Thangapandian of Dindigul, were residing and working on the coconut farm owned by Madathukulam MLA C Mahendran. On Tuesday, around 11 pm, a drunken brawl among them turned violent when Manikandan attacked Moorthy with a sickle. Hearing of this, the MLA dialed Gudimangalam SI Saravana Kumar, who alerted Shanmugavel.
