SC: Understaffed HCs not under supervisory control

THE Supreme Court on Tuesday said high courts are not under its supervisory control and if they are functioning with half their strength, one cannot expect them to cope with all the matters expeditiously.

A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta made the observation and refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Allahabad High Court for early disposal of an appeal that has been pending for more than 13 years.
The counsel appearing for the petitioner argued before the apex court that despite filing two applications before the Allahabad High Court for early disposal, the matter has remained stagnant.
