AFTER sending a notice to WhatsApp over its new username feature, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has sent similar notices to other messaging platforms offering username-based communication, including Telegram and Signal.
As per a government official, the notice sent to WhatsApp was not intended only for the Meta-owned platform, MeitY has issued similar notices to Telegram and Signal. The official said the purpose of the exercise is to examine whether such features could facilitate cybercrime and online fraud.
“This notice was not meant for only one company, but the government will send notices to all other companies operating on the same model in the country,” said the official.
