Many of his works have been translated into English and other Indian languages.

Saptama Ritu, which appeared in 1977 and is considered a classic in Odia literature, fetched him the Kendriya Sahitya Akademi award in 1978. Rath's magnum opus 'Sri Radha' was published in 1985. The unique long form poem used Radha-Krishan legend as a metaphor of love that occupies the consciousness.
He was a recipient of the highest accolades and awards in literature. While he was conferred the Padma Bhusan award in 2006, the Atibadi Jagannath Das Award, the highest literary award of Odisha, was presented to him in 2018. He had also received the State Sahitya Akademi Award, Saraswati Samman (for Sri Radha), Bishuva Samman, Sarala Puraskar and Kabir Samman.
