The Kerala High Court on Wednesday held that all washrooms of petrol pumps along national highways shall be open to the public round the clock with display boards announcing their availability, modifying an earlier order that had said the washrooms were for customers' use, not the general public.

In the case of petrol outlets in all other areas, the washrooms shall be made available to all customers and transit travellers in the state, the HC said, and asked the Petroleum Traders Welfare and Legal Service Society, an association of 300 retail outlet dealers and one of the petitioners in the case, other retail outlet owners and dealers and oil marketing corporations to restrict the use of washrooms only if there was any safety or security concern.
