PRTs to help mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in the region
THE PERIYAR Tiger Conservation Foundation, in collaboration with the forest department, will soon form primary response teams (PRTs) comprising members of local communities surrounding the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Vallakkadavu area.
The move comes in the wake of the frequent human-wildlife conflicts reported from the forest fringes of Vallakkadavu over the past couple of years. Considered first responders in cases of human-wildlife conflicts, PRTs act as the bridge between residents and the forest department and are crucial to minimizing negative outcomes in such incidents.
