S children, many of us were captivated by the tale of The Little Mermaid — a magical being who lived in the sea, swam through coral reefs, and held her breath for minutes on end.

- Pooja K

These seemed like fantastical abilities, far removed from reality. But what if this wasn't just a fairy tale? What if there are people who live lives not too different from hers?

The Bajau tribe, often called the "Sea Nomads" or "Sea Gypsies," are an indigenous group primarily found in the coastal areas of Southeast Asia — especially Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. For centuries, they have lived in harmony with the ocean, diving deep without oxygen tanks, fishing beneath the waves, and navigating the sea as if it were their natural element. But what truly sets them apart is not just their culture — it's their biology. Scientists have discovered that these sea nomads have developed unique physical adaptations to thrive underwater in ways most humans could never imagine.

Traditionally, the Bajau are a nomadic seafaring people, spending most of their lives on boats or in stilt houses built over coral reefs. They are expert freedivers, often diving to depths of up to 70 meters (230 feet) and holding their breath for over five minutes. Their daily lives revolve around spearfishing, harvesting sea cucumbers, and collecting other marine resources. Some Bajau communities live almost entirely on boats called lepa-lepa, rarely stepping onto land.
