Rain, wind wreak havoc in Kollam; traffic curbs in place

Rain and wind lash P'thitta; 124 houses damaged

HEAVY RAIN and strong winds continued to wreak havoc across the district on Thursday. According to the district administration, eight houses were partially damaged in the downpour. A total of 125 people have reportedly suffered losses, and agricultural damage has been estimated at Rs. 122.76 lakh. The overall loss has been pegged at Rs. 124.76 lakh.

The administration also confirmed that no relief camps have been opened and no families have been relocated so far.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Engineer of the PWD Roads Section informed that traffic and parking will be completely banned on the stretch from Karbala Junction to SN College Junction and vice versa, as well as from Kappalandimukku-Kadappakkad Road to SN Women's College.

The restriction will be in place from 9 am on May 30 to facilitate the cutting and removal of a dangerously overhanging tree branch near SN Women's College. In addition, due to ongoing heavy rain, boating services at the Sampranikodi tourist spot have been cancelled as a precautionary measure, the DTPC Secretary's office informed.
