PRIVATE buses curtailing or skipping trips on lean days or times of the day has been a long-held complaint of passengers. Now, the motor vehicles department (MVD) is finally taking action against the practice of short termination by introducing a radio frequency identification (RFID)-based system at major bus stops in cities like Kochi.

"The system is being designed in such a way so as to ensure that buses halt exactly at bus stops at the designated time for at least a minute, or until passengers alight or board. Stoppages will be monitored by creating an RFID-based interface between buses and bus stops," Transport Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam told TNIE.
