CREMATIONS at the Payyambalam crematorium faced delays on Friday as mourners were forced to wait in the heavy rain due to a lack of adequate tents at the facility. People who arrived from Pallikkunnu, Chakkarakkal and Peralassery were left waiting for hours as the continued apathy towards infrastructure at the crematorium drew sharp criticism from locals.

Despite repeated complaints, little has changed at Payyambalam, where only five of the 30 cremation pits are equipped with zinc sheet coverings — all of which are reportedly leaking. The poor condition of these makeshift roofs has made cremating bodies during the rainy season a growing challenge, as water seeps through and delays the process.
