Mental health, affordable cancer treatment top focus

THE health sector received a 7% hike in the Union Budget 2026, with a major push to mental health, making cancer and rare disease treatment more affordable, and taking initiatives to develop India as a global biopharma manufacturing hub.
Primary focus was given to creating a skilled healthcare workforce to cater to the growing disease burden, especially noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, cancer and autoimmune diseases, and the rapidly increasing elderly population. The health research received a 24% increase in funds.
“In terms of resource allocation, total health budget, including health research, witnessed 7% rise in 2026-27 Budget Estimates (BE) compared with 2025-26 BE,” Dr Sarit Kumar Rout, Professor of Health Economics and Financing at the Indian Institute of Public Health, Bhubaneswar, told this newspaper.

3 IPS officers suspended in R G Kar rape-murder case
