Allow Us To Complete Our Term Before Bifurcating HDMC: Corporators To Govt

EXPRESSING deep anguish over the state government's alleged plan to supersede the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) to carve out a new corporation for Dharwad, a decision to which effect has already been taken, all members, except a few Congress members, have asked the Mayor to write to the government opposing any such move and authorise the latter to convene a meeting of MPs, MLAs and MLCs from the twin cities to plan future course of action.

As BJP member Umesh Koujageri raised the issue by moving a call attention motion during the general body meeting held here on Monday, members, cutting across party lines, expressed their fear of losing their membership two years before the completion of their term. Koujageri said that any such move by the government would be an attempt to curtail their rights. Since they have been elected for five years and taken oath as members of the HDMC, the government should let them complete their tenure.
