Week after elephant killed & mutilated in Dharmapuri, 2 foresters suspended

A week after an elephant, believed to be a tusker, was killed and the carcass was burnt, the Dharmapuri district forest officer (DFO) has suspended two foresters for failing to prevent the incident.

According to forest department, on March 1, staff received information that an elephant carcass was found near Neruppur near the Karnataka border. Members of the anti-poaching squad, DFO K Rajangam and a veterinary team reached the spot and found a severely mutilated carcass. The trunk had been cut into two and an attempt had been made to cut the head too. Body parts including tushes and tusks were missing. Officers said it was difficult to identify the gender and age of the animal as the carcass has been burnt and had decomposed.
