Threat to hills Projects in the guise of clean and green energy are undoubtedly a threat to the mountain ecosystems globally
While the globe is all set for a transition from conventional to renewable clean energy in concurrence with the theme "Our Power, Our Planet", policy-makers are envisaging the year 2030 to triple their energy generation. The idea has embraced unconditional global support. However, the outcomes rely on several compounding factors that influence its success, making green energy a less reliable option.
TN, in an attempt to become energy-self-sufficient by 2030, had in 2024 announced to invest ₹60,000 crore to establish 15 new Pumped Storage Hydro-Electric Power stations under the green energy category. These projects ensured contributions from the centre.
As part of the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, the state plans to source 50% of its energy from renewable sources, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. The Nilgiris has been substantially providing generated electric energy to the state unconditionally since 1902. However, proposals to additionally initiate five Pumped Storage Hydro Electric Projects, viz., Kundha (4x250MW), Sillahalla (4x250MW), Upper Bhavani (4x250MW), Sandynallah (4x300MW) and Sigur (4x300MW) to meet peak season demands haven't gone down well with dwellers of the hill station.
