PIL in C'garh against wild buffaloes being held captive
July 22, 2024
|The Morning Standard
THE Chhattisgarh high court has served notices to the Centre and the state government in a petition filed over keeping six wild buffaloes translocated from Assam captive in an "unlawful breeding centre" inside Barnawapara wildlife sanctuary, around 80 km from Raipur.
Asiatic wild buffalo, the state animal of Chhattisgarh, is a highly endangered species, with only one pure breed male, named 'Chotu', left in the state. According to the forest department data, there were 67 wild buffaloes in 2005 and the numbers declined to 12 in 2006.
