IN late January 2024, some 250 kms from Rajgir in Bihar, the venue of the ongoing women's Asian Champions Trophy, India faced Japan after losing to Germany in a penalty shoot-out in Ranchi.

That was their last chance to qualify for the Paris 2024 and Kana Urata's goal in the first quarter was enough for Japan to shatter Indian hearts on a foggy winter evening at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium. It was a tectonic moment for women's hockey in the country as immediately after that, head coach Janneke Schopman announced her retirement from the position.
