THE two big Hindi heartland states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh witness diverse reactions to the passage of the Waqf Bill in Parliament.
In Bihar, the partner of the ruling alliance, the Janata Dal (United), suffered a setback when five leaders resigned over the party's support of the Bill, saying Chief Minister Nitish Kumar "hurt the sentiments of Muslims". In neighboring Uttar Pradesh, the government is ready to reconstitute the Waqf Boards-- Shia Central Waqf Board and Sunni Central Waqf Board--and issue fresh guidelines to regulate them.
