Caught between Odisha NTPC plant & ash pond, villagers demand relocation

VILLAGERS of Alupada and Borubaga in Odisha's Sundargarh district, locked between NTPC power plant and its fly ash pond, have intensified demands for relocation to escape the worsening air, water and soil pollution caused by fly ash.

The Darlipali Super Thermal Power Project (DSTPP), commissioned by NTPC, began operations in 2019 after acquiring around 1,652 acre in Raidihi and Darlipali villages, including 1,275 acre of private land. Two units of 800 MW each generate 1,600 MW of electricity. However, the accompanying challenge of fly ash disposal has left the surrounding resembling a vast desert of ash.
