THERE were fears Max Thompson's time at Newcastle United may have come to an end earlier this year as the young goalkeeper's contract approached its final weeks.

However, the Magpies academy product was offered a new one-year deal and has continued to work alongside the likes of Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale and John Ruddy on a daily basis as he assesses what could lie ahead.

The Geordie shot-stopper has been able to take advantage of UEFA’s homegrown quota regulations after being named in Eddie Howe's Champions League squad and he was an unused substitute in league phase fixtures against Barcelona and Union Saint-Gilloise over the last month.

Thompson's on-field involvement during the current season has consisted of two appearances for the Magpies Under-21s as they suffered home defeats against Premier League 2 rivals Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
