A WORLD War Two serviceman from Walker is set to be honoured with a plaque at a memorial event in Dunkirk.

- OWEN YOUNGER

Andrew Robinson Evans served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War and was involved in a plane crash in 1944.

Now, 81 years later, Andrew will be remembered with a commemorative plaque at the site of the crash - after a search was launched to track down his family.

Chris Balderston and his French friend Jean-Christophe Diaz have been seeking relatives in the North East, with the latter's grandfather, Maurice Dycke, having saved Andrew Evans' life when his plane crashed.

Jean-Christophe said: "My grandfather saved two soldiers during the war, an American and an Englishman. Our childhood village of Steene will now honour our grandfather and his brother for their act of bravery.

"An exhibition was already held during the last commemorations, but there will soon be a commemorative plaque placed in the village later, which is why we are looking for the family of the English soldier.
