BUSY TIME FOR RESCUES AT LAND AND SEA
VISITORS to Northumberland have once again been warned not to take risks with the Holy Island Causeway after more drivers were trapped by the infamous tides.
The county council say between 10 and 20 vehicles get stranded every year, prompting rescue efforts from the RNLI and the Coastguard.
The causeway to the island, also known as Lindisfarne, is only safe to cross at certain times when the tide is out. Outside of these times, which are clearly posted, the road quickly submerges.
According to the local authority, “several” cars have already been stranded on the causeway this year. Just last month, families were forced to abandon their vehicles and dial 999 for an emergency rescue after being cut off.
The council say there are “no second chances for those who try to beat the sea” Coun Guy Renner Thompson, who represents the Bamburgh ward, branded motorists who get stuck despite all the warnings “stupid”.
He said: “I don’t know what else the council can do. It’s not the sort of place you want lots of signs and flashing lights
“People need to check the tide times. The county council does not want to put permanent barriers up because that's not what the locals on the island or the mainland want.
