EMILY GRAY on attempts to open up the film industry to people who may not usually get their chance to shine
-
AN AWARD-winning Newcastle production company and talent development organisa-tion has launched pioneering initiatives in the hope of driving more meaningful inclusion into the screen industries.
Beacon Films, based in Byker, supports deaf, disabled and neurodivergent filmmakers from across the North East.
The two pioneering programmes - Focus Forward and Inclusive Lens - aim to equip creatives with tools to create more inclusive environments in both film and TV. Beacon Films is also launching a paid Film Trainee-ship for a disabled filmmaker in the North East.
It comes as figures from the Creative Diversity Network reveal only 9.6% of those working in the screen industries identified as disabled last year. Will Sadler, co-director and development director at Beacon Films, said: “These programmes are about more than ticking boxes - they're about building real understanding, fostering community, and removing the invisible barriers that keep disabled and neurodivergent talent from thriving”
