Magpies condemn police treatment of fans in Marseille

NEWCASTLE United intend to raise their concerns over police treatment of the club's fans at this week’s Champions League game in Marseille with European football's governing body.

The club is calling on Uefa, Olympique de Marseille football club and French police to investigate in relation to the ‘unacceptable treatment’ of supporters at Tuesday’s game.

Numerous complaints were made and footage shared on social media about the way fans were treated in the aftermath of United’s 2-1 defeat at the Stade Velodrome.

Newcastle believe ‘unnecessary and disproportionate force’ was used towards fans and have said their supporters looked ‘visibly distressed’ as the threat of ‘crushing’ became apparent.

In a strongly-worded statement, Newcastle confirmed they will raise their concerns with the three parties and have encouraged any supporters affected by the incident to get in touch.

“We will be formally raising our concerns with Uefa, Olympique de Marseille and French police in relation to the unacceptable treatment of our supporters by police at Stade Velodrome following Tuesday's Uefa Champions League fixture,” said the Magpies.
