Leisure centre hit by more delays
August 18, 2025
|The Journal
BUILDING work is still yet to begin on a Newcastle leisure centre that was meant to open a year ago.
It was originally hoped the new Outer West Leisure Centre in West Denton would be ready to open its doors in the summer of 2024. But the long-awaited sports complex continues to suffer repeated setbacks and bosses now say it is unlikely to be completed until late 2027.
Construction work on the £34 million facility, which is earmarked for the site of the demolished Outer West Pool and library in West Denton Way, has not even started.
Newcastle City Council, which previously predicted this April that building would begin this summer, blamed the presence of a high-voltage cable that needs to be diverted from the site for the latest delays.
