Plant autumn-planting garlic in a sunny, well-drained spot.

Break bulbs into cloves and set tip-up, 15cm apart in rows 30cm apart, 3-5cm deep. Improve heavy soil with grit or plant in raised beds to avoid waterlogging. Water in and mulch lightly to deter frost damage. Avoid planting shop garlic as it could carry soil-borne diseases.
When your sweetcorn silks have browned and the cobs feel full, peel back some of the husk and press into a kernel with your thumbnail. Milky juice means it's ready, watery is under-ripe, and doughy is overripe. Twist and pull to pick, then cook promptly for the sweetest flavour. Watch me test my sweetcorn on YouTube @daviddomoney
