I was fascinated by latest edition of ‘Pope Idol’

My obsession this week has been the Papal Conclave.

Or, if popular culture is more your thing: Pope Idol 2025.

Honestly, it took up way too much room in my head.

Because how can blokes get to retirement age and only have the following job options available to them:

■ B&Q;

■ President of the United States;

■ Holy Father?

Obviously the latter is narrowed down further due to a need to be both Catholic and unmarried.

But that’s still a fair old list.

And, if you meet these requirements, just like any other Simon Cowell production worth its salt, anyone can apply.

You've just got to like big crowds, attention and TV cameras. Oh, and God, naturally.

I think what fascinated me most about the Conclave is how old -school it was.

Sequestered from the outside world without so much as a Nokia to communicate with your clergy mates.

Writing your vote on pen and paper, which then gets put in this urn-type contraption.
