Housing plan for region set for £23m investment

The next phase of development at Sunderland's Sheepfolds regeneration area, the transformation of Gateshead town centre, and five plots around Northumberland are among those set to benefit from investment potentially worth almost £23 million.

After the North East was awarded a further £17.6 million of Government money to help kickstart building on derelict and disused land, it has now been confirmed that 12 projects are in line to receive funding.

North East mayor Kim McGuinness announced an extension to the region's Brownfield Housing Fund programme, which has already put in £49.2 million of public investment towards almost 3,000 new homes, in June. And the North East Combined Authority (NECA) has now confirmed that projects across Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, Sunderland, Northumberland, and County Durham have been chosen for funding - if they can be contracted by a March 2026 deadline.
