Hall damaged in blaze added to at-risk register

CONSERVATION campaigners have named a fire-ravaged university halls in Newcastle among the country’s most endangered heritage assets.

It is now more than two years since a massive blaze wreaked havoc at Newcastle University’s Henderson Old Hall, in High Heaton.

The historic site, which had been disused for several years before the fire in June 2023, has now been added to an at-risk register compiled by Save Britain's Heritage.

Campaigners at the charity, which seeks to protect threatened historic buildings across the country, described Henderson Hall as “among the most gracious” student accommodation imaginable.

The devastating fire destroyed most of the Grade II-listed building's roof, while the ruined site was then left exposed to the elements for months afterwards before being covered in scaffolding.
