SHIREMOOR locals are calling for a burned-out “eyesore” ex-care home to be torn down, over a year since the site was engulfed in flames.

Residents fear the blaze last June has left the building “dangerous” and in need of quick action.

At around 6pm, on June 18 last year, emergency services responded to reports of a significant fire at the former Stanton Lodge Care Home, on Milfield Avenue.

Nearby properties were evacuated as a precaution but residents were allowed to return shortly afterwards.

The fire was a case of suspected arson with police claiming a group of young people were seen entering the empty care home carrying what was believed to be accelerants.

Six people aged between 13-21 were subsequently arrested.

However, following an investigation, the six originally arrested individuals will face no further police action. The force went on to say if it receives new information it will investigate.

More than 12 months on from the fire, locals are calling for action for the ruined property to be removed, with several stating the building is bringing down the area and posing a risk to children.
