Bill doesn't go far enough
June 24, 2025
|The Journal
I AM immensely relieved that Parliament has passed the first stage of the Assisted Dying Bill.
Rejection now, it is suggested, would have thrown the issue back into the long grass for another 10 years or more.
Happily, I am not myself terminally ill, but I have great concern for those who are, and for some amongst the long-term severely disabled community.
My regret, such as I have any, is that the Bill does not go nearly far enough. Its prime safeguard, the requirement for a prognosis of death within six months, is one of its greatest failings.
