A MOTORCYCLIST was seriously injured when a pensioner failed to see him as she pulled out of her driveway.

- ROB KENNEDY

William Turner, 68, had been riding motorbikes since passing his test in 1975 and he enjoyed taking his vintage Honda into the Northumberland countryside.

On April 16, 2023, he left his home in Gateshead to go for such a ride and was heading home on the A696, between Otterburn and Ponteland, at around 11am.

As he passed the remote home of great grandmother Eleanor Patrick, just off the A696, he was travelling at about 45 to 50mph on the 60mph road. His next memory is walking up in the RVI in Newcastle.

Newcastle Crown Court heard it transpired that shortly after Mr Turner went around a bend in the road, Patrick had been pulling out of her drive on to the A696 in a Toyota Yaris.

She didn’t see Mr Turner coming and pulled out, causing him to be thrown off his bike and into the road.
