‘oystem change

- BY DR UPUL WIJAYAWARDHANA

As we are fast approaching the anniversary of the election of AKD as President, perhaps, it is an opportune moment to take stock of what happened since.

It was an earth-shattering event in Sri Lankan politics when the leader of a party responsible for two insurrections leading to huge economic and infrastructure damage, on top of the horrendous human cost, was voted to the highest office, though not by the majority, However, three months later, his mandate was solidified when the voters gave him a two-thirds majority in parliament. Leaving aside the fact that he still speaks as if he is in the opposition and his supporters continue with often exaggerated vilification campaigns against opponents, as old habits die hard, concerns have been raised about emerging negative tendencies and ‘system change’ which was the bulwark of their pledges for election, seems increasingly to be a mirage!
