How to overcome social anxiety
August 11, 2025
|The Island
Social anxiety is more than just shyness or occasional nervousness. It is a common mental health condition that affects millions worldwide, making every day social interactions feel overwhelming and frightening. In a world that increasingly values connection and communication, social anxiety can be a significant barrier to personal and professional growth.
-
Social anxiety disorder, often simply called social anxiety, is characterised by an intense, persistent fear of being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated in social situations. People with this condition may dread events such as meeting new people, speaking in public, or even casual conversations. This fear can lead to avoidance behaviours, isolating individuals from opportunities that many take for granted.
Unlike normal nervousness, social anxiety is persistent and excessive. It can cause physical symptoms, such as sweating, trembling, a racing heart, and nausea. More importantly, it can impact a person's daily life, relationships, and self-esteem.
The causes of social anxiety are complex, involving a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Family history can play a role, as can past negative social experiences, such as bullying or humiliation. Personality traits like introversion may increase vulnerability. Additionally, brain chemistry and how the nervous system processes fear responses can contribute.
