Decolonising English in Sri Lanka

English, introduced as the language of administration and education, has continued to hold a privileged position in Sri Lankan society.

Decolonising English in Sri Lanka is crucial for fostering linguistic and cultural diversity, promoting social equity and empowering local communities.

The introduction of English to Sri Lanka during the British colonial period (1796-1948) aimed to consolidate colonial power and facilitate administrative control. English became the language of the elite, while indigenous languages, particularly Sinhala and Tamil, were relegated to subaltern status. Postindependence linguistic policies fluctuated between promoting Sinhala and Tamil and maintaining English's prominence, leading to complex linguistic dynamics.

In contemporary Sri Lanka, English remains a symbol of social mobility and economic opportunity. Proficiency in English is often associated with higher education and better job prospects.

However, this has also led to social stratification, with access to quality English education being unevenly distributed. The dominance of English perpetuates colonial hierarchies and marginalises those who are not proficient in the language.
