The Myanmar Junta has denied a request by ASEAN to meet with the country’s ousted elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi as the former military leader turned “president” prepares for his first official visit to a member state in the 11-nation trade bloc.
Theresa Lazaro, Special Envoy to Myanmar, made the request to meet with Suu Kyi through ASEAN’s Foreign Affairs secretariat as her son Kim Aris stepped up his “proof of life” campaign, urging the military to prove his mother is still alive.
Suu Kyi has not been seen for years. On April 30, Myanmar state media said the Nobel Laureate had been moved from prison to a “designated residence” in Naypyidaw as the military continued to resist international calls for her release, made ever since it staged a coup d’etat in early 2021.
