Leo urges authentic and lasting peace’ in Ukraine and Gaza
Pope Leo XIV has appealed to world leaders to pursue peace, not war, in his first Sunday address to crowds in St Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
The new pope, formally Cardinal Robert Prevost, called for an “authentic and lasting peace” in Ukraine, a ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of all Israeli hostages.
The Chicago-born pontiff also welcomed the fragile ceasefire agreement signed by India and Pakistan on Saturday. “No more war,” the pope said, delivering his speech in Italian.
Wearing a simple white papal cassock and his silver pectoral cross, he repeated a frequent call of the late Pope Francis and noted the recent 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Any hidden gems in eastern Canada that we should see?
Q My wife and I are off to Canada in 10 days' time for two weeks. Landing in Montreal, our only set agenda is going to Nova Scotia for a few days to see friends, so we are favouring eastern Canada. We've rented an SUV, and done the normal research using Lonely Planet. Have you any secret gems of landmarks, locations, driving routes, hotels or restaurants you would recommend?
