Pakistan warned to expect floods as India opens dams

India has warned Pakistan to expect flooding after it opened the gates of major dams on rivers in its part of Kashmir after severe flooding across the region.
At least 33 people have died in flash floods in India-administered Jammu and Kashmir due to unusually heavy monsoon rain. Around 30 Hindu pilgrims were killed on their way to the Vaishno Devi shrine, and another three people drowned in separate floods in Doda district.
While releasing water from dams is a routine flood-control measure, India's decision comes at a time of particularly sour relations following the two countries' four-day armed conflict in May, when India suspended a key water-sharing agreement between the two neighbours.
Islamabad said it had received the warning yesterday and subsequently issued a flooding alert for three rivers that flow into Pakistan from India.
