'Wrong decision' to scrap winter fuel cash

LIBERAL Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said there will be a “lot of people who are elderly” who will “struggle this winter” as a result of means-testing the winter fuel payment.

Speaking in Brighton after the party opened its autumn conference, Sir Ed was asked about figures from the Department for Work and Pensions released on Friday which estimated 780,000 pensioners still eligible to receive the winter fuel payment will lose the benefit.

He said: “What we’ve been arguing all along is that there will be millions of pensioners who are just above the limit for pension credit, millions who aren’t who won’t realise they can get that or don’t feel they should.
