THE OLD REGISTER OFFICE TO BE DEMOLISHED FOR 56 NEW HOMES

Plan for high-end flats on Hoe

How the proposed luxury block of flats on the site of the former register office on Plymouth Hoe could look

(BRL DESIGN GROUP)

PLANS are expected to be submitted this year for a "multi-million-pound" block of high-end flats on the site of Plymouth's former register office. Architects have drawn up proposals to demolish the current two-storey building, on the Hoe, and build a stepped block of up to six storeys, with space for a cafe and farm shop on the ground floor.

But the design doesn't include a luxury hotel, even though this is included in the Joint Local Plan policy PLY27. That earmarks the site for a mixed use development including a hotel and 52 homes.

Architects at Plymouth's BRL Design Group said they were not looking to include a hotel in the plans, however, because it would have meant construction of a towering building of about 11 storeys, similar to the nearby Crowne Plaza hotel. Instead they are looking at a building containing 56 apartments, of one to three bedrooms, with balconies and terraces, and 62 parking spaces underground.
