TRAFFIC DISRUPTION LIKELY AS £45M SCHEME CONTINUES

- By WILLIAM TELFORD

Next phase of Woolwell works leads to warnings

(PENNY CROSS)

THERE will be 18 months of traffic disruption as a major £45m overhaul of one of Plymouth’s busiest roads reaches its second phase and sees trees chopped down.

Construction is about to get under way on the next part of the Woolwell to The George transport improvement scheme and Plymouth City Council is already warning motorists of issues they will have to face, and explaining why trees will have to be felled.

The authority has, however, stressed it has now saved dozens of trees initially under threat, and is inviting residents to information sessions where they can see plans and ask questions.

The ambitious Woolwell to The George Transport Scheme was started in September 2024 and was blamed for causing gridlock at times on the busy A386.

Phase one was completed in November last year and now work is about to begin on phase two will include the replacement of Woolwell Roundabout with a signalised junction, as well as the widening of Tavistock Road and improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

From Monday, January 26, five nights of work will start to remove traffic islands on Tavistock Road between the George Junction and Woolwell Roundabout.

Lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be in operation between 7pm and 6am during this time.

To ensure pedestrians can cross Tavistock Road safely after the central islands are removed, a temporary signalised crossing will be provided near the footpath link to Frensham Avenue, next to Turners of Roborough.
