Local votes were sadly aimed at national politics
May 12, 2026
|The Herald
IWAS extremely disappointed to find out that people in Plymouth failed to heed the sensible advice of Philip Bowern in his 'Thought of the Day' column on May 7 to “keep it local” in the council elections.
The results, with Reform candidates winning most of the seats, clearly indicate that voters were not interested in electing councillors whose priority was to look after the needs of residents in their wards.
Instead, most of the votes were aimed at national level, against the Labour Government. Even the election leaflets sent out by Reform simply stated “Vote Reform to get Labour out of Plymouth” - nothing about what their candidates would do to enhance life of residents they represent.
